What is an event location?

Event location (or location for short) has become established in German-speaking countries as a term for event venues, even outside the event industry.

While in Germany the term “Lokal” was previously used and in Switzerland the term ‘Lokalität’ is common, the Anglicized term “event location” is now used as a generic term for event venues. These can be exclusively indoor spaces or open-air locations.

Please note: In English, “location” actually means “site,” while an event venue is referred to as a venue. In Germany, on the other hand, a Lokalität or Lokal now refers to restaurants, bars, and pubs. In other words, places where the consumption of food and drink is the main focus of a social gathering.

Locations refer to clubs, discotheques, and modern cafés or restaurants. People come together in these places to socialize, celebrate, dance, or for business purposes. To express the purpose more precisely, there are terms such as event location, conference location, and wedding location. However, numerous meeting places can also be put to other useful purposes, such as when a cinema or theater is used for a conference or a company presentation. In the media industry, the term film location refers to the shooting location, and event locations are also often used for film shoots or photo shoots.

In the Assembly Venue Ordinance (VStättV(O)), the federal states specify the rules for the construction and operation of assembly venues or buildings that can accommodate more than 200 people.
