Gabriel, born in 1959, studied German, politics and sociology in Göttingen to become a teacher. Prior to his political career, he worked as a teacher in adult education. He became involved in the SPD early on and rose steadily through local and state politics. As Minister President of Lower Saxony (1999-2003), he took on a top office at state level for the first time before making his mark in federal politics as Federal Environment Minister (2005-2009), Economics Minister and Vice-Chancellor (2013-2017) and finally as Foreign Minister (2017-2018).
Experience meets international networking
Today, Sigmar Gabriel contributes his political experience to numerous international bodies: he is Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke, a member of the Trilateral Commission and the European Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a political advisor for the Eurasia Group, a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe. He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Bonn, with a research stay at Harvard University on his CV.
