RIO Filmtheater for Events in Mühlheim an der Ruhr

The RIO Filmtheater at the Medienhaus looks back on a turbulent past. In 1994 everything started so well. The city of Mühlheim an der Ruhr decided that the city lacked a small, fine cinema next to the two large multiplex cinemas and converted the rooms under the Filmbüro into a movie theater. We successfully took over the business and also opened a café on site. Prominent figures such as Sönke Wortmann, Dieter Kosslick and Adolf Winkelmann were soon our fans and they even “bought” their own chairs to finance the cinema. Johannes Rau, then Germany´s Federal President, also owned such a chair and he even personally opened the house. Unfortunately, our venue was also interesting for other projects and when in 2007 a new building with luxury apartments was planned, we unfortunately had to relocate to an uncertain future.

Fortunately, the construction of a new media house took place a year later, and the city suggested that the established and popular RIO be resurrected there. Of course, we did not have to think twice, so our 80-seat cinema celebrated its reopening in October 2009. Today it carries an award for its outstanding program every year. Thanks to the space available and a Dolby Surround system, you can also rent the premises for your private or business event. Whether for a birthday, as a special treat, or even as an incentive program: with us, you can turn your event, for example with exclusive special shows, into a very exceptional experience.
